Dental implants are changing the way people live and have increased the quality of life in many patients. Dental implants are designed to provide a secure foundation for a dental crown. The implant and the crown together offer a replacement for a missing tooth; missing due to an extraction, accident or severe decay. Getting a dental implant virtually allows the person to eat everything normally while also providing a natural, cosmetic replacement for a tooth/teeth.
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are small titanium alloy posts that are surgically secured into the mandible (jawbone) or the maxilla (upper jawbone). The small posts act as anchors similar to how a natural tooth has roots. With time the bone will fuse with the posts, creating a very strong foundation for a crown or artificial (prosthetic) teeth.
Implants are also important because they maintain a person’s facial structure. Without a tooth or teeth a person’s face might appear angular and have visible sunken cheeks.
What is the procedure for Dental Implants?
For most people there are usually two surgical procedures necessary for placing dental implants, based on complexity. The first procedure is to extract (pull) the teeth/tooth that need to be replaced. Depending on the complexity, this could be a simple or surgical extraction. After healing, your dentist will decide on how much healing is needed on an individual basis, you are ready for the titanium alloy posts to be placed into the jawbone. After the placement of these tiny titanium anchors the process to design your prosthetic teeth will begin. Depending on the type of implant a few visits might be needed until you and your dentist are happy with the look and fit of your new teeth/tooth.

At Milwaukee Dental Group, our expert clinical providers make every effort to provide you with dental implants that can last a lifetime. Generally, with proper technique, high quality implants, and proper care there should be no reason why your implants cannot last a lifetime.
What types of Dental Implants are available?
There are many different types dental implants available. There are two main types of dental implants; single tooth implants and MDI (mini-dental implants). Single tooth implants replace a single missing tooth and close the gap caused by it, as an alternative to a bridge. MDI (mini-dental implants) are implants specially designed for those seeking an alternative to dentures for their lower jaw. Four titanium posts are implanted into the lower jaw and then a special dental prosthesis is designed to replace all of your lower teeth. This prosthetic is then secured to the posts, eliminating the need to remove/put in dentures on a daily basis.
A Bridge vs. Dental Implants?
Both a dental bridge and dental implant are designed to replace missing teeth. Both have certain benefits and disadvantages that need to be discussed with your dentist. The most important advantage to dental implants is the maintenance. Dental implants require little extra maintenance and high quality implants should be able to last a lifetime. Dental bridges and crowns will likely need to be replaced every 10 to 15 years. Another advantage to dental implants is that they do not need to be placed using healthy teeth as anchors unlike dental bridges. Based on your oral health a bridge might not be possible because of the condition of your other adjacent teeth that are used as an anchor for the dental bridge. If you are considering a dental implant the main advantages to think about are- implants are much easier to maintain. They look and feel more natural. And, less caution is needed when chewing and eating.
Dental bridges on the other hand also come with a number of important advantages. A dental bridge is a much easier process and no surgery is needed. The main advantage to dental bridges is for those who do not have healthy jawbone tissue or have had significant facial trauma. Dental implants can only be placed into healthy jawbone tissue so they are secure. Thus, for some people dental implants might not be an option making dental bridges the best option for improving their smile and day-to-day lives.
It is important to discuss these questions with your dentist. At Milwaukee Dental Group our dentists will create individualized treatment plans based on your needs/desires and work with you to achieve the results you desire.
